Stephan Balkenhol was born in 1957 in Fritzlar, Germany. He lives and works in Karlsruhe, Berlin and Meisenthal. Since 1992 he has been teaching sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karslruhe. He creates his figurative wood sculptures and relief not only in large-scale but also in downscaled dimensions. Material and wear marks are clearly visible and the colouring is nearly realistic but simple. Expressionless faces and distanced anonymity leaves the beholder to a wide range of interpretations. Numerous works are situated in public space as well as held in several major collections like the Museum Ludwig (Cologne) and the Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean (Luxembourg). Besides, Galerie Klüser supported numerous national and international museum exhibitions and published several catalogues on the artist. The gallery has been representing Stephan Balkenhol since 1992.
