Sigmar Polke (1941–2010) was an influential German artist and founding member of ‘Capitalist Realism’. He studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy and is known for his experimental, multifaceted painting, combining techniques such as photography, screen printing and the use of unconventional materials. His works ironically reflect social themes such as consumerism, mass media and cultural identity. Polke’s works are exhibited in major museums worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, Tate Modern in London, Centre Pompidou in Paris, as well as Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin and Museum Ludwig in Cologne.
