Sean Scully’s work bases on an artistic approach to vertical and horizontal colour stripes and rectangles. By using different techniques and materials Sean Scully deals creatively with the minimalist motifs. While he used tape in his early works in order to create accurate edges, he breaks loose of this method during the 80s. At this time he wittingly decided to paint the outlines manually so that they appear softer and vivid. Brushwork and coating are clearly visible and a dark earthy range of colour characterises most of his paintings. Besides, Sean Scully also creates etchings, lithographs, pastels and watercolours. They all resemble one another in motif and image structure. Also his photographic work deals with the geometric forms by capturing individual facades, doors, windows and brick walls. Furthermore, During the 90s he made the series „Floating Paintings“ containing of rectangular aluminium blocks that are painted with stripes and hung up on the long side. Sean Scully was born in Dublin in 1945. After completing his visual art studies in London he moved to New York in 1975. Besides New York, he lives and works also in Barcelona and Munich. In 2007 Sean Scully was appointed lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. The Galerie Klüser has been representing the artist since 1993 and presented his work in several solo and group exhibitions.
