Robert Mapplethorpe (1946–1989) was an American photographer known for his provocative and aesthetically precise black-and-white photographs. He was born in New York City and began his career in the 1970s. Mapplethorpe gained fame through his portraits, nudes, and floral studies, characterized by strong composition and clear lines. He is especially known for his controversial images of the BDSM subculture, which sparked societal debates about artistic freedom and censorship. His works have been exhibited worldwide in major museums such as the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and the Tate Modern in London. Mapplethorpe died in 1989 from complications related to AIDS. His work remains a milestone in contemporary photography.
