Per Kirkeby (1938–2018) was a prominent Danish artist known as a painter, sculptor, and writer. 

After studying geology, he turned to art in the 1960s and gained international recognition for his gestural abstract works inspired by nature and science. Kirkeby exhibited worldwide in renowned museums such as the Tate Modern (London), the MoMA (New York), the Centre Pompidou (Paris), the Museum Ludwig (Cologne), and the Louisiana Museum in Denmark. He participated multiple times in documenta and the Venice Biennale and is considered one of the most important Scandinavian artists of his time.
