Info

Jiří Georg Dokoupil (* June 3, 1954, in Krnov, Czechoslovakia) is a Czech-German painter and graphic artist, known as a co-founder of the artist group Mülheimer Freiheit and the Neue Wilde (New Wild Ones) movement. His work is characterized by a wide variety of techniques and materials, which he continuously develops and reinterprets.

Dokoupil fled to Germany with his family in 1968 and studied art in Cologne, Frankfurt/Main, and New York. In the 1980s, he became known for his expressive-figurative painting, opposing the prevailing Minimal and Conceptual art. He developed over 100 different techniques, including his famous soap bubble paintings, where he filled soap bubbles with pigment and burst them onto the canvas to create organic, lively structures.

Dokoupil lives and works in Berlin, Prague, Madrid, and Rio de Janeiro. His works have been exhibited in major museums worldwide, including Documenta 7 in Kassel, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, and the Haus der Kunst in Brno. In 2012, he was awarded the Lovis Corinth Prize.
