Info

Imi Knoebel (*1940 born in Dessau) is an important German artist known for his minimalist and abstract works. He studied under Joseph Beuys at the Düsseldorf Art Academy.

Knoebel works in painting, sculpture, and installation, characterized by clear forms and reduced color palettes. His art represents minimalism and abstraction with a strong focus on color, form, and space. He uses geometric shapes and restrained color application to reveal structures, rhythms, and relationships between surfaces and spaces. His works often reflect on painting as a medium itself—focusing on materiality, surface, and the interplay of light and color. He deliberately avoids narrative content, instead emphasizing emotional impact and pure aesthetics.

His works have been exhibited in renowned international museums, including the MoMA New York, the Tate Modern London, the Neue Nationalgalerie Berlin, and the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen Düsseldorf. Imi Knoebel is considered one of the most influential German artists of the present day.
