Cindy Sherman (*1954 in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, USA) is an influential American artist and photographer known for her conceptual self-portraits. She studied art at the State University of New York at Buffalo and began to explore questions of identity, gender, role assignments, and media images in the late 1970s. Over the course of her career, she experimented with various styles and themes: from grotesque body images and film stills to fashion photography and Renaissance influences. Through costumes, makeup, and poses, she questions, among other things, societally shaped images of women and the role of women in the media context. Playing with her own identity and deconstructing stereotypes are always central.
